Metadata: Photography and the Construction of Meaning (2010)
Metadata: Photography and the Construction of Meaning investigates the relationship between photographic images and the information used to describe, locate and interpret them. Developed through Nishioka's MFA research, the work considers the photographic image as an incomplete carrier of information, whose meaning is constructed through its relationship with appended data.
Working at the construction site of the new Telecom building on Willis Street, Wellington, Nishioka photographed materials removed from the site alongside the locations from which they originated. Fragments of glass, concrete and other matter, already weighed, labelled and inventoried within the construction process, became photographic objects through which location, classification and material evidence could be reconsidered.
Developed through Nishioka's MFA at Massey University, Wellington, 2010.
