Mizuho Nishioka is a Japanese-born photographic artist and researcher based in Aotearoa New Zealand. She is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. She approaches photography as an experimental system through which image, apparatus, technical systems and the natural world interact.
Working with photographic technologies, electronics, software and constructed apparatus, Nishioka prepares conditions for capture in which environmental phenomena can participate in the formation of the image. Rather than generating images, she establishes systems through which duration, movement, light and material conditions are recorded while aspects of authorship remain beyond her direct control.
Selected presentations include Noorderlicht Biennale at Museum Belvédère (2025), The Wrong Biennale (2025), Personal Structures during the Venice Biennale (2022, 2024) and Ars Electronica (2020, 2021, 2022).
