Movement_17; Tasman Sea explores the distribution of photographic authorship between human intention, technological systems and environmental processes. Environmental phenomena are allowed to participate directly in the formation of the photographic image.
Rather than treating the environment as a subject to be recorded, Nishioka establishes the conditions for capture and allows movement, duration and material processes to influence what becomes visible. The resulting image emerges through an interaction between prepared apparatus and forces beyond the artist's direct control.
Presented at Personal Structures, Venice, 2024, and subsequently at the Noorderlicht Biennale, Museum Belvédère, Netherlands, 2025.
