Night Works (2026–) Work in progress_Untitled Black II (2026)

Work in progress_Untitled Black II was made during a 45-minute recording in driving rain, several hours after sunset. The apparent absence of the image is not an absence of event or information.

Black is approached not simply as a colour or surface, but as a condition in which recorded information approaches the limits of visibility. Examination reveals colour, grain and variation within what initially appears to be an almost empty field.

Night Works extends Nishioka's investigation into incomplete information and the limits of photographic recording. The current enquiry leaves the recording system exposed for extended periods at night, waiting to see what else might participate: rain, wind, insects, plants or other environmental activity. The work asks when these encounters cease to be incidental traces and begin to operate as collaborators in the image-making process.
