Uninhabited Space 2 forms part of an early investigation into industrial landscapes, duration and the limits of ordinary vision. Working through extended photographic exposure on site, Nishioka records spaces emptied of human presence while allowing light, time and the conditions of the environment to accumulate within the image.
Rather than treating photography as an instantaneous record, the work considers the image as something formed through duration. Industrial structures emerge from darkness as traces of activity and systems normally encountered only partially. These early works anticipate Nishioka's continuing interest in photographic processes through which site, technology and environmental conditions participate in what becomes visible.
