Tide Sketch II (2022)

Tide Sketch II explores what happens when environmental processes are allowed to participate directly in the formation of a photographic image. Rather than using technology to stabilise or simply document the landscape, Nishioka constructs an apparatus through which changing conditions of water, movement, light and duration can influence what is recorded.

The artist establishes the system and its parameters, but the resulting image remains contingent upon forces beyond her direct control. Photography becomes a negotiation between human intention, technological behaviour and an environment that continues to change throughout the act of recording.

Presented at Ars Electronica, Welcome to Planet B, Linz, Austria, 2022. Curated by Gerfried Stocker.
