MachineTime_NatureTime investigates the technological processes through which photographic images are formed. Developed through Nishioka's doctoral research, the work deliberately disrupts processes that ordinarily remain invisible within photographic production, allowing the behaviour and limitations of technology to participate visibly in the resulting image.
Botanical material, movement and duration interact with digital, electronic and computational processes, producing fragmentation, displacement and chromatic disruption. Rather than treating these effects as technological failure, Nishioka employs disruption as a creative strategy.
MachineTime_NatureTime formed the concluding body of work in Nishioka's PhD in Fine Arts at Massey University.
