North by Northwest (2020)

North by Northwest developed from photographic material gathered during a field trip through mid-Canterbury. Rather than treating these images as fixed records of landscape, Nishioka subjects the photographic material to processes of digital disruption, testing the possibilities and limitations of the technologies through which the landscape is recorded.

Organic forms remain recognisable while becoming fragmented, displaced and reorganised through the image-making process. The resulting works occupy an unstable position between photographic observation and technological transformation, where neither landscape nor apparatus remains entirely transparent.

Presented as a solo exhibition at Ashburton Art Gallery, 2020. Curated by Shirin Khosraviani.
